Spine Road High School hosts 7th annual Mathematics Olympiad

Congratulations to Mr Baron and Imperial Primary for winning the Mathematics Olympiad for the second consecutive year!

The Mathematics Olympiad aims to give Grade 7 Mathematics learners the opportunity to compete and grow together both academically and socially. This year the Spine Road High School Mathematics Olympiad attracted 514 learners from 30 schools from all areas of the Western Cape. The Mathematics Olympiad Awards Evening took place on the 17th of April in the Spine Road High School Hall, with proud, parents, principals, and learners attending.

Mr Najaar, retired principal of Spine Road High School and MC of the Mathematics Olympiad, said “It is our belief that every child has the ability to do well in maths. We created these platforms to encourage learners to do Mathematics at High School and to enjoy the challenges of Mathematics”.

Mr Fairbairn, the principal of Spine Road High School explained that as the focus of the school is Mathematics and Science, the management and staff strive to encourage learners to excel in Mathematics, especially in the lower grades, in order for the learners to achieve excellent results later in their high school career. We are extremely proud of the results achieved by the primary schools at the Olympiad over the past seven years. The school management and staff would like to thank the numerous sponsors that made this event possible.

Imperial Primary School in Beacon Valley proudly took the 1st prize trophy for the second consecutive year. A hearty well done and congratulations to the students participating in the Olympiad.

Colin Baron, principal of Imperial said:  “Winning the maths olympiad shows that our school is a learning organization where we realize that competition is also part and important to show us if we’re doing it in the right way. The whole community with 1 933 pupils and 52 educators at our school, supported us and were excited on our win this year,” said Mr Baron.

Shanelle Becker and Moneba Nero, both teachers in mathematics at Imperial (who also coached their pupils) said they believe that hard work and dedication pays off, and they’re grateful for the opportunity given to their students to show off their talents.

Alfonso Smith, deputy principal and head of the intermediate and senior phase said: “Mr Baron believed the community has a greater role to play in education. Our winning can be ascribed to the sense of community, where every child in every classroom receives a quality education.”

The three top learners in mathematics were Kaylee Van Harte, 13, from Imperial Primary School, Cassie English, 12, from Bergvliet Primary School and Leah Johnson, 12, from Imperial Primary. They were the only three pupils who received 92% in tests and performed admirably in every test and section of work posed.
